Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth was on the 24th day of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side as a child because of her Aunt Denise. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day for the love of literature, art and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay learned the art of being a good vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay developed a social mindful from her mother. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at the college. She began her career as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked check the trash inside the house of a member on the jury. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the industry of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist at an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful. She is an actress most well-known for American Experience (1987) and A More Perfect Union (2009).
